Want to see my list? I have it attached at the bottom of this post, but keep reading for the juicy details on how I got to making it!
When I was in high school my mom bought Jack Canfield's The Success Principles for me, and I ended up reading it THREE times because I got so much from it.
The biggest thing I took away from that book was how to figure out what you want in life.
Specifically, I learned about figuring out what I want in my life so that I can focus on achieving those goals.
I used to have a generalization in my head about what I wanted to accomplish like: “sure, I’d like to go skydiving one day or have a business,” but they were never clear goals.
Without clear, detailed goals, you don't know what to focus on.
They were too generic so nothing was ever going to happen. Once I sat down and really let my mind come up with more details I had much more fun with setting goals, they meant more to me, and I was actually proud of what I came up with.
One tool to help find out what you want in life is a "Bucket List", an "I Want List", or what I call my "Be/Do/Have List."
Make a “Be/Do/Have” list
This is a list of 100 things I want to be in my life, do in my life, and have in my life. Kind of like a bucket list.
When I first made this list I made it like a book by printing pictures of each goal on individual pages and then I would write exactly when I wanted it to happen and any other details I wanted. I flipped through it pretty often and I would randomly think about these things throughout my day.
When I was in college I wanted to update my list. I brought up the idea to my suitemates and they wanted to do it too so we all started brainstorming.
After I updated it, my list looked a lot simpler: it was just 4 lined papers instead of a picture book.
We each pinned our lists on our walls so that we would see them every day. If there was a goal that one of us could start working on right away, we would all help to make it happen.
Your own list may surprise yourself
I honestly have no idea why, but when we all sat down to write our lists I added “run a half marathon”... I did not see myself as a runner or enjoy running, I hadn’t even been running on the treadmill at the gym, but I added it and I was down. This was in October of 2017. I looked up half marathons, signed up for one, and started running.
Just 4 months later in January 2018, right after my 20th birthday, I ran my first half marathon!
Never in a million years did I picture myself accomplishing something like that but once I wrote it down, it just became real.
My List has less than 100 goals. Coming up with 100 things you want to do in life can be hard, and that's okay! Since first writing my list I’ve achieved 9 goals and I’ve taken off 29, I’ll come up with new ones this year to complete my list.
My List
Some are pretty simple like “try sushi” while some are a little more intense and time consuming like “hike Pikes Peak in Colorado”.
At first I wrote down anything that sounded cool and I had way over 100 but over the years I’ve narrowed it down to just the ones I really want to accomplish.
Send me a picture of your list!
I'd love to see it!! If you have out-of-the-box ideas for your list, please message me and share them, I'm always open to new ideas. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
xoxo,
Allison
