Moving From Maryland to California

Updated: Oct 25, 2025

426 days in Maryland. I had a lot of different emotions about leaving - stressed because everything was changing, sad because we made so many memories there, excitement for our cross country road trip, and blessed to be able to start this incredible new journey in California.

The movers, Jim & Marvin with Stewart Moving & Storage, came and packed up our whole apartment; they did an excellent job. The apartment was bare, echo-y, and we had a lot of spare time! I felt content while enjoying the last few days where we had no place to be, no major obligations; we watched many episodes of Wicked Tuna.

Going to church one last time at Riverside Community Church was bittersweet. We were emotional saying goodbye to our church family for sure. Being a part of Riverside Community Church was extremely special for us; our family there is one of the main reasons we’ll miss Maryland so much.

Our Maryland Highlights

Getting married in Maryland will always be a special memory, the only thing we would’ve changed was having our families there with us.

Honeymooning in Havre De Grace will always be a highlight - it was so much fun! We stayed at the VanDiver Inn, played games, ate pizza, and took long walks along the bay. The Inn turned out to be adorable in person, with a luxurious bed and bathroom! I was hesitant to book it without seeing it in person first but once we were there, I was surprised with how much I truly enjoyed it.

Moving into our first apartment together was a BLAST. We built a 2,000 piece Star Wars puzzle on the floor for two weeks with only a mattress, two camping chairs, and cardboard boxes for furniture. My favorite part of our apartment was the balcony - it overlooked a small creek and forest. I would journal and drink coffee out there in the mornings throughout the summer, and in the winter it was a gorgeous sight whenever it snowed.

Annapolis for my husband's birthday was super awesome, one of our best day trips in Maryland. We went sailing and walked around a ton of stores. I go into detail about the trip in this post.

Snowboarding at Roundtop Mountain Resort and date night at Bacco’s was extremely fun. Dinner at Baccos is always a joy, it’s become my favorite restaurant to go to for date night. My husband learned to snowboard while I refreshed my memory and we both fell on our butts a ton, but it was a great trip.

The National Aquarium in Baltimore was stunning, my favorite part was the open tank with all kinds of fish, sting rays, and sharks. We bought popcorn and a t-shirt for me, then we went to Bloom’s Brooms Dairy for ice cream!

Working in Maryland was a pleasure - our coworkers are now our close friends and of course saying goodbye was difficult.

All in all, Maryland surprised me. I fell in love with the nature, the people, and the adventures. I love that I got to live there for over a year and experience a completely different culture than on the West Coast. What a blessing, thank you Jesus!

Xoxo,

Allison
